Stars with EGOT status: See who’s won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony

A small group of entertainers can say they have won all of the big awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony (EGOT). Read on to see when and how various Hollywood stars achieved the coveted status.
Elton John joined the club Jan. 15, 2024 when he won an Emmy for outstanding variety special for “Elton John: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.”
“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world,” John said.

Viola Davis got her EGOT at the 2023 Grammy Awards on Feb. 5. The actress earned her first Grammy for best audio book, narration and storytelling recording for “Finding Me.”
“I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola, to honor her life, her joy, her trauma. It has been such a journey. I JUST EGOT!” Davis said in her acceptance speech.

Jennifer Hudson became a member of the ultra-exclusive EGOT club at the 2022 Tony Awards on June 12. “A Strange Loop,” for which she is a producer, won best musical and secured her the final award to reach legendary status.

John Legend was the first Black man to join the prestigious club. He completed it in 2018 with his Emmy win for his producer role on NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which won live variety special.

English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber completed the EGOT alongside John Legend and Tim Rice with an Emmy for “Jesus Christ Superstar.” He has earned several of his awards for his work with the musicals “Evita,” “Cats” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Actress and singer Rita Moreno won a best actress Oscar for “West Side Story,” a Grammy for “The Electric Company,” a Tony for “The Ritz” and two Emmys.

Composer Alan Menken completed his EGOT sweep after winning a Daytime Emmy in outstanding original song in a children’s, young adult or animated program category for his work with “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure,” the Disney Channel public relations X account announced on July 26, 2020.

Actor, writer and director Mel Brooks won multiple Tonys (“The Producers”), Emmys (“Mad About You”) and Grammys (“The 2000 Year Old Man in the Year 2000”, “The Producers”). His best original screenplay Oscar win came in 1969 for “The Producers.”

American songwriter Robert Lopez is the first double EGOT winner, meaning he’s won at least two of each of the major awards. Parents can think him for the stuck-in-your-head songs “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “Remember Me” from “Coco.” His Tony awards were earned for his work in musicals “Avenue Q” and “Book of Mormon.”

Producer Scott Rudin, center right, was the first producer to win the EGOT title. His Oscar came when “No Country For Old Men” won best picture. He’s won several Tony awards for his work in musicals such as “The Book of Mormon,” “Skylight” and “Hello, Dolly”

The late film and theater director Mike Nichols won multiple Tonys (“Annie,” “Spamalot”) and Emmys (“Wit,” “Angels in America”). His best director Oscar was for “The Graduate,” and he won a Grammy for best comedy album for “An Evening with Mike Nichols and Elaine May.” Nichols was married for many years to Diane Sawyer and died at 83.

American orchestrator Jonathan Tunick has also won a Grammy (“No One Is Alone”), Emmy (“Night of 100 Stars”), Tony (“Titanic”) and Oscar (“A Little Night Music”).

The late composer Marvin Hamlisch earned multiple Oscars (“The Sting,” “The Way We Were”), Grammys (“The Way We Were”;), and Emmys (“Barbra: The Concert”). His Tony Award for best original score was awarded to “A Chorus Line.” He died at 68 in August 2012.

The late American actor Helen Hayes also earned the EGOT title. Today, the annual Helen Hayes Awards recognize theater excellence in Washington, D.C. Her career spanned 80 years and she died at 92.
